Question by brefire: How would you describe this character (picture included)?
I’m writing a novel and the picture (which I’ll post the link to below ) resembles my main character. I’m God-awful when it comes to description. I know I should know my own characters and map out their characteristics in details, but I’m not very good at it. I can put down a few basic details and that’s about it
I feel the need to describe the main character in great depth because I don’t want my readers to think of her as they wish, but for them to see her as the way I want them to. So description is very important. Please be specific so I can detail her out and put the description in my novel. I won’t copy but observe the answers and use that as a guide to create a perfect description.
So here is the picture.

Classically beautiful with high cheekbones and large, long-lashed eyes somewhere between velvety brown and mahogany. Long black hair that ripples in gentle waves down her shoulders and silky skin the colour of moka.
What do you think? Answer below!
She had had cheeckbones and rosy cheeks, her lips full and dusted pink. Her curly hair was thick and dark, falling around her face, perfectly over her shoulders like silk, her skin casting a warm cinnamon glow. Her large eyes were like melted chocolate with long dark eyelashes, making her appear demure.
XD IDK about your main character’s name….so, yeah.
Hi! Well, the first thing I’d like to point out is that is an immediate turn off when you start reading a book and there’s a huge paragraph describing the character. No one wants to read. “She had black hair and brown eyes. She was 5 ft 5 in. Her skin was the precise shade of a…” and so on. It is important to incorporate the description into the action. This will form a relationship between the character’s appearance and his or her personality, thus making the character more memorable. For example, suppose your character was meant to be apathetic, I might describe her as:
She looked up, her disinterested brown eyes barely acknowledging the question.
Now I will think of this character as having a look of perpetual boredom with brown eyes. If she was intended to be mean, I might go about it this way.
“Oh, sorry,” she said in a sweet voice, but the sneer in her brown eyes told the real story.
If she’s supposed to be the type of person who can’t sit still, maybe
“she twirled a lock of her dark, wavy hair around her finger over and over again, paying little attention to the conference speaker.”
That’s my biggest advice when it comes to description, but if you just need some ideas in “block form” here they are:
Hair:dark and wavy. If you wish to convey the length, do something like “she tugged at the end of her long, braided hair”
eyes: (adjective) brown. Please don’t use warm brown eyes. it’s overdone. Use a personality description. Curious brown eyes, wary brown eyes, etc.
skin: olive
height: don’t state it straight out ie: she was 5 foot 4 inches. Compare her to other characters. “Despite her average size, she felt tiny next to this giant of a woman”
That’s really all you need. People tend to go on and on about “her flawless skin” or “her full, pink lips,” but you really don’t need those. We are more interested in the personality than the descriptions. If she looks like you, BE CAREFUL! People tend to overly flatter characters who are like them, looks or personality-wise, for obvious reasons.
By the way, I’m sorry if I sound rude or anything. I don’t mean to imply that you will do these things. I was just stating what most inexperienced writers do.
She has mocha colored skin that has not one blemish on it. Her violently curly, dark brown hair frames her heart shaped face and cascades down her shoulders like a chocolate waterfall. She has plump, pink lips that have not a crack on their surface and low arched eyebrows. Her dark complexion is flawless with not a zit or a blackhead that demolishes it’s beautiful, smooth surface. She has light brown eyes that seem to almost pop when you look at them, standing out against her dark brown skin.
Hope I helped 🙂
